Chad Grier

Meet Your Hosts

Coach Grier enters his fifth season at Providence Day after leading the Chargers to their 3rd straight NCISAA Division 1 State Championships in 2023.

Coach Grier’s overall record is 127-23 in 13 seasons with 7 state championships, 1 state runner up, and 3 state semi-final appearances.

He began his career at Davidson Day where he started the program from scratch and went 64-9 with 4 state titles in 6 years. Grier then took over at Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, where he served as Head Coach and Athletic Director. Prior to his arrival at Oceanside, the Landsharks had never won a game. In 3 years, Grier led Oceanside to a 27-7 record, a Regional Championship, 2 playoff berths and an appearance in the Lower State Championship Game (state semi-finals). Grier took over the PD program in the Spring of 2020 and led the Chargers to a 4-2 mark, the Big South Conference Championship and an appearance in the state-semi-finals in the Covid-shortened season. That was the second time in 45 years that PD had eaten each of its 3 Charlotte rivals in the same regular season. In 2021, the Chargers again swept its local conference rivals in winning their 2nd straight Big South title, earned the #1 seed in the Division 1 playoffs and finished the season with their first State Championship since 2011. In 2022 the Chargers again won the state championship, became nationally ranked for the first time in school history and finished first in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16. In 2023 the Chargers won their 4th straight conference title, 3rd straight state championship,  became the first private school to be named Sweet 16 champions, and finished in the Top 50 in the national rankings!

Grier’s ability to develop student-athletes is best reflected in nearly 90 of his players continuing their careers in college at all levels including the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Ivy League, and Service Academies. Grier specializes in teaching Quarterbacks. His son Will played QB for his first Davidson Day teams where he was the 2-time NC Gatorade Player of the Year, a 3-time All American and won 4 national high school player of the year awards. Will had an outstanding college career at Florida and West Virginia where he finished 4th in the Heisman voting before being drafted in the 3rd round by the Carolina Panthers. He just finished his 5th season in the NFL. Grier’s QB’s also include Sam Hartman who was a state champion, the SC Shrine Bowl MVP and owns the record for most touchdown passes in ACC history after a stellar career at Wake Forest and Notre Dame; Michigan recruit Jadyn Davis who won 2 state championships, was NC Gatorade POY and 2-time NC MR Football, Max Preps NC POY and the NC Preps POY!

In his 13 years as a Head Coach, each of his starting QBs has been named All-Conference, All-State and/or All-American and each have gone on to play college football (Florida/West Virginia, Furman, Wake Forest/Notre Dame, Drake, South Carolina, East Carolina and Michigan).

Grier played Quarterback at both Richmond and East Carolina where he learned under some of the best football minds in the game including Kevin Gilbride, Mark Richt and Steve Logan. While starting a family in Charlotte and working in business, he earned his MBA from Queens University. He started coaching as a passion hobby in the 90’s at numerous camps and as an assistant coach at Western Guilford High School, Charlotte Latin and SouthLake Christian before taking on his first head coaching position at Davidson Day in 2010. It wasn’t until Grier took the job at Oceanside that he became a full-time coach. He has served in numerous all-star games including Assistant Coach in the 2015 Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Head Coach of the 2016 Adidas Freshman All-American Bowl in Naples, Florida, Head Coach in the 2017 Army All-American Bowl, and Head Coach of the 2022 Carolina Bowl. He was named as one of the Top 5 coaches in the Charlotte area over the last 40 years by the Charlotte Observer.

Coach Grier is a Charlotte native. He has been married to his wife Nila for 15 years and is the father of four sons, Will (28), Nash (26), Hayes (23), and Hank (4).

Gary Green

WR's

Gary Green aka Coach G likes to look at himself as a Louisiana and North Carolina Native, He attended Brother Martin High school in New Orleans, La where he primarily starred as a Defensive Back. Green then transferred to South View High School in Fayetteville, Nc where he began his career and fell in love with the Wide Receiver position. He continued his football career at City College of San Francisco a California junior college, and after two years he would transfer to Western Carolina University where he exceled playing Wide Receiver and graduated with a Bachelor of science in Entrepreneurship and small business. Green was often looked as a player/coach for the way he would recruit and develop and teach the younger wide receivers at WCU the offense and techniques to be successful at the position.

After Graduating college Green took a short time away from the game of football and worked in the real estate property investment industry, sales industry and other business ventures in Atlanta, Ga. Green began to coach little league football at the 8-year-old level. He found his true calling of Coaching, mentoring, and Developing not only athletes but young people to become the best they can be through hard work, dedication, and sacrifice to accomplish their goals. He would relocate to Charlotte, Nc for work in 2016, and this is where he began coaching and developing on the youth and high school levels. Green would go on to coach at South View High school, and Mallard Creek high school in charlotte, NC where he developed some of the best wide receivers in the state. As well has teaching, implementing and developing new schemes for the offensive to go along with the system the team was already running during his tenure. Green will serve under Head Coach Chad Grier at Providence Day high school as the program’s Wide receiver coach and developer for 2023.

Green started Competitors Only Sports LLC a skills Development company that offers programs for all athletes. With a focus to develop not only wide receivers but any athlete who had the passion to get better and the will to compete against our worst enemy, OURSELVES. He has clients all over the Carolinas ranging from 8 years old up to professional level athletes. In multiple sports, soccer, football etc Green considers himself blessed by Having multiple players receive scholarship offers from all college levels and go on to have players play in Acc, Socon, sec, Ciaa, Meac, Big 12, Big south and more conferences. He says this is a true testament to the work and dedication the kids have put in over the years to gain notoriety and opportunities to continue to play at a high level.
